VICTORIA
- The BC Games Society announced today that bids have been received from
ten communities to host the 2008 BC Winter Games, 2008 BC Summer Games,
2010 BC Winter Games or 2010 BC Summer Games.
The
ten communities submitted 17 separate bids. The communities are:
Campbell River, Fort St. John, Kelowna, Kimberley/Cranbrook, Nanaimo,
Prince Rupert, Salmon Arm, South Peace (Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Tumbler
Ridge, Pouce Coupe), Terrace, and the Township of Langley. Some
communities have bid for more than one event; however, only one of the
four BC Games events will be awarded to a particular community.

"The
response we have seen from BC communities to host the BC Games is a
testament to our long and successful history. Combined with renewed
enthusiasm for amateur sport in BC, communities recognize the importance
of hosting the BC Games as a valuable investment in volunteers, youth,
and community," said Kelly Mann, President and CEO, BC Games
Society.
Communities
submitted bids including proposed facilities, resolutions of support
from school boards and municipalities, and an outline of plans to host
this major event in their community. The bids will be reviewed and
scored by the BC Games Society and then a recommendation will be
presented to Minister John Les, Ministry of Small Business and Economic
Development and the Minister responsible for sport.
Since
1978, the BC Games Society has staged the BC Summer and BC Winter Games.
Over their 27-year history, the Games have been hosted in 37 communities
around BC and have involved 100,000 athletes representing every region
of the province.
