Host Communities Chosen for 2008, 2009 and 2010 Northern BC Winter Games

The Honourable Olga Ilich, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts, announced today the host communities for the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Northern BC Winter Games. Mr. Blair Lekstrom, MLA Peace River South, and the Honourable Patrick Bell, MLA Prince George North, represented the Minister of Tourism Sport and the Arts at the announcement events in their respective ridings.

"The Northern BC Winter Games is more than just an annual sporting event. It encourages volunteerism, promotes community-level sport development and a culture of fitness, and brings Northern communities together in a spirit of friendship and cultural exchange," said Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Olga Ilich. "Congratulations to the winning communities and best of luck as you prepare for successful Games in 2008, 2009, and 2010."

The 2008 Northern BC Winter Games will be hosted by the City of Dawson Creek, February 7-10, 2008. Dawson Creek last hosted the Games in 2005 and now has new facilities that will contribute to the success of the 2008 Northern BC Winter Games. Dawson Creek has previously hosted Northern BC Winter Games in 1977, 1998, and 2005, as well as the BC Winter Games in 1988 and the BC Seniors Games in 1992.

The District of Mackenzie will host the 2009 Northern BC Winter Games, February 12-15, 2009. Mackenzie is one of the smallest communities to host the Northern BC Winter Games, having previously done so in 2001.

The City of Prince Rupert will host the 2010 Northern BC Winter Games, which will coincide with the City's 100th Anniversary. The Prince Rupert 2010 Northern BC Winter Games will be held February 4-7, 2010. Prince Rupert previously hosted the Northern BC Winter Games in 1999, on the 25th anniversary of the Games, as well as in 1981 and 1989. Prince Rupert has also hosted the BC Seniors Games in 1994.

"We are all looking forward to the unique and exciting style that each of these communities will bring to hosting the Northern BC Winter Games," said Bob Irwin, President of the Northern BC Winter Games Society.

The Northern BC Winter Games provides a competitive sport and healthy living opportunity for British Columbians in northern BC. The Northern BC Winter Games include participants from the northern Regional Districts starting from 100 Mile House. Founded in 1975, the Northern BC Winter Games are the longest running annual multi-sport event in BC and include competition in a minimum of 14 primary sports each year.

The 2007 Northern BC Winter Games will be held in Fort St. John February 8-11.
