Ron
Rubadeau - President
Ron is recently retired as Superintendent of SD#23. His
proven leadership and organizational skills will be valuable in
leading the Kelowna 2008 BC Summer Games Society. His passion for arts and
sport runs very deep in Kelowna. Ron has played a musical
instrument (double bass) for more than three decades of Theatre
Kelowna productions and is an avid sailor and Senior Canadian Race
Official. He is a past Canadian National Sailing Champion and has
conducted the racing programs for thirty six National Sailing
Championships and three World Sailing Championships. Ron has
considerable leadership qualities and is an expert at delegating
responsibility.
Terry
Schneider - Vice President
Terry is an owner and Executive Vice President of Prestige Hotels
and Resorts. Terry's passion in sport comes from his 20 year
involvement as a soccer coach at the house league, premier select,
and secondary school level of competition. Terry is looking
forward to contributing his leadership ability to many aspects of
the Games organization. Terry will bring a high level of
enthusiasm and operational expertise for community events to the Kelowna
2008 BC Summer Games team.
Al
Cumbers - Director of Accommodation
As Director of
Operations for SD #23, Al is responsible for facility operations,
transportation, and capital planning. He also has previous Games
experience as the Athletes Village Manager for the 1999 Pan Am
Games in Winnipeg, as well as the 2003 BC Disability Games in Kelowna.
Al's connection with the School District facilities will be
valuable as the athletes will be housed in a number
of the local schools.
Bill
Winters - Director of Administration
Bill is a partner with Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants. Bill
was the Finance Chair for the 2004 Memorial Cup and a member of
that Executive Committee. He was also the Co-Chair for the 2006
World Junior Hockey Championships, Kelowna Site, and also the
Kelowna Liaison to the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championships
Organizing Committee in Vancouver. Bill was also the School Board
Liaison for the 1988 BC Winter Games in Dawson Creek.
Lesley
Spiegel - Director of Ceremonies
Lesley has been active in the event planning arena for more than
20 years, working with prominent organizations such as Southern
Sun Hotels in South Africa, Westin Hotels in Canada, BC Health
Authorities, and the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.
With event planning credentials from the prestigious George
Washington University, Lesley delivers her events with passion and
flare, a testimony to the participants and her expertise.
Steve
Jenkins - Director of Communications
Steve is the General Manager for TELUS Communications Inc. for the
Interior South BC Region. Steve brings over 20 years experience in
leading sales, marketing and strategy development portfolios.
Steve's sport passion is spending time as a Youth Curling Coach
and Youth Curling Program Coordinator, and is excited about
sharing that passion for summer sports.
Kari
Purvis - Director of Food Services
Kari is currently the Sales and Catering Manager for the Coast
Capri Hotel. Prior to this, she was the Administration Manager for
the Okanagan Gymnastic Centre and directly involved in all
competitions and events held at the facility. Kari is also on the
Board of Directors for the Kelowna Speed Skating Club, as well as
Chair for the Okanagan Regional Training Centre for Speed Skating.
Her community experience and thorough knowledge of the food
industry position Kari well to manage food services for these
Games.
Doug
Manning - Director of Friends of the Games
Doug brings a diversity of life experiences to the leadership
team. He is a former high school teacher, counsellor, and
district administrator for career programs in the Central Okanagan.
He is a parent, grandparent, husband, public speaker, and local
author, most recently publishing Reel Life Wisdom, a
collection of inspirational quotes from the movies. In 2006,
Doug retired from his role as co-founder and CEO of Bridges
Transitions, an award winning career and self-management
business. He admits to a lifelong passion for the gentleman’s
sport of rugby, and has been involved as a player and coach for
many years. Doug’s experiences in these many fields make
him a natural to serve as Director of Friends of the Games for the
2008 BC Summer Games.
Dr.
William Cheyne, MD - Director of Medical Services
Willie has been an active family physician in Kelowna since 1978.
He is also the Primary Care Physician for the Kelowna Sports
Medicine Clinic and is the founding physician and the Primary Care
Physician at the UBC-O Sports Medicine Clinic. Dr. Cheyne has also
provided Team Physician support to the Okanagan Sun Jr. Football
Club, Kelowna Spartans Jr. Hockey Club, BC Lions Football,
Canadian Davis Cup Team, and UBC-O Sports Teams.
Natalie
Walstrom - Director of Promotions
Natalie is the Marketing Manager for Orchard Park Shopping Centre.
As part of Kelowna's 2005 Centennial Celebration, Natalie played a
key role in the time capsule project that is currently on display
at Orchard Park Mall. Natalie is looking forward to the
opportunity with the 2008 BC Summer Games to bring her enthusiasm,
bright ideas, and extensive marketing skills to this major
community event.
Dot
Shoneberg - Director of Protocol
Dot has been part of many community initiatives including the
Millennium Celebration in charge of the Centennial Ambassadors,
and has been on the Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers since
1999 (and has been President three times). Dot is currently the
Office Administrator with the 2007 BC Special Olympics Winter
Games. Dot understands the demands of ensuring that all the
proper protocols are expertly established and followed.
David
Goodall - Director of Registration & Results
David is the Manager of Networks and Telecommunications with
Okanagan College. He was the Director of Registration & Results
for the Kelowna 2000 BC Seniors Games and was also a volunteer in
the ticket sales with the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.
David will bring extensive knowledge and experience to the
computer networking world on modern communications systems.
Cheryl
McKinnon - Director of Security
Cheryl is a Constable with the local RCMP Detachment and brings a
high level of energy and understanding of security programs and
requirements. Her connections include regular contact with youth
throughout the school system. Cheryl will bring a unique approach
to relationship and interactions with youth throughout these
Games.
Renata
Mills - Director of Special Events
Renata first got involved in special events through Parks Alive as
the Program Coordinator. She has extensive experience in all
aspects of creating, marketing, and promoting special events in
Kelowna, as well as working with numerous organizations in the
special event business. Renata is currently the Executive Director
for the Festivals Kelowna Society and is very well connected in
the festivals and events community.
Doug
Nicholas - Director of Sport
Doug joined Pacific Sport Okanagan as the General Manager in 2001
and has guided the program from its infancy to present day
success. Over a few short years the Okanagan Centre has become the
largest regional training centre in BC. His position
connects him with many regional and local sport organizations.
Along with Doug's sport administration background he also brings a
wealth of experience in Games and championships preparation.
Grant
Snow - Director of Transportation
Grant has had a role in the transportation requirements for many
recent major Kelowna events including the 2000 BC Seniors Games, and
Chairing of the Transportation Committee for both the 2004
Memorial Cup and 2006 World Junior Hockey Championships-Kelowna
Site. Well acquainted with community projects, Grant contributed
significantly to the growth and development of sport facilities
through his many years of volunteer efforts with the Kelowna
Kinsmen Club.
Jim
Gabriel - City Liaison
Jim has been with the City of Kelowna for 13 years and is
currently the Sport and Recreation Manager. Jim is well connected
with many aspects of City operations, especially the City
recreation, sport and parks facilities. His energy and enthusiasm
will contribute significantly to the Games planning and hosting.
Jim was instrumental in the creation of Sport Kelowna, and currently volunteers as the Vice-Chair of the provincial Pacific
Sport BC organization. Jim's understanding of the needs of sport
organizations is very thorough. Along with Jim's strength in
community and program development, he also brings past Games
planning and preparation experience through involvement with the
Alberta Winter Games and the Arctic Winter Games.
Reid
Oddleifson - City Liaison
Reid has been directly involved in several multi-sport events,
starting with the Southern Alberta Games. Instrumental in bringing
the BC Summer Games, Seniors Games, and the BC Disability Games to
Kelowna on six occasions in the past, Reid also spear-headed the
application/approval process to bring these BC Summer Games to
Kelowna. Reid has been with the City for more than 25 years, and
throughout his career has had the opportunity to work with most
sport and cultural organizations and service clubs in the area.
He is currently the Development Manager for the Recreation Parks
and Cultural Services Department. Very knowledgeable and well
experienced in all aspects of Games organization, administration,
and delivery, Reid will be a valuable asset to the Kelowna 2008 BC
Summer Games Society.
