The Government of British Columbia, introduced the BC Games in 1978 as an opportunity for British Columbians to showcase their athletic abilities. As the BC Games moved around the province in a yearly multi-sport event it also became apparent that the Games were about the abilities of the communities to showcase their own talents. Over the years, communities across the province have embraced the hosting opportunity as a chance to highlight their citizens and their facilities to the rest of the province. While the BC Games are a four-day celebration, the legacy of these multi-sport events lives on in new and improved facilities, enhanced volunteer skills, and financial impacts to the community due to participant and volunteer spending.
The BC Games Society and its Board of Directors have continued to improve the BC Games experience for volunteers by providing online guidelines, sample materials, computer software, and a wealth of experience and information passed on from previous volunteers via the BC Games Society Event Managers who work in the Host Communities. These materials and resources assist the volunteers to create, imagine and stage a quality experience while not having to worry about recreating the processes and structures of Games from scratch.
Empowering Volunteers
The BC Games Society and its team of Event Managers work within an organized structure of each Host Community to stage one of five multi-sport Games held in the Province of British Columbia. The staff are skilled and experienced managers who practice and endorse the philosophy of Helping Others Lead. This approach enables the volunteers to bring their own ideas and creativity to the planning of the Games and to take full ownership of their tasks in staging the BC Games.
