Ryder Finishes Seventh!
Canadian cycling fans had reason to cheer Sunday, as Victoria cyclist Ryder Hesjedal pedaled to seventh place in the world's premier cycling race, the 3,642-kilometre Tour de France.

Games Alumni Fourth in Tour de France Third Stage
It was perhaps Ryder Hesjedal's greatest day as a pro cyclist and he was savouring the moment. "Today was amazing," said the Victoria rider, after he broke away to lead the third stage of the 2010 Tour de France on Tuesday before being reeled in by a frantic chasing pack and pipped into a still-admirable fourth place finish.

Hosting BC Transfered to Community Partner
The Hosting BC website www.HostingBC.ca, a marketing website showcasing the readiness of B.C. communities to host sport events will be managed the BC Games Society and Tourism BC, through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts.

Ryder Steals L.A. Spotlight with Stage Win
BC Games alumni Ryder Hesjedal won the 134-kilometre final stage of the Tour of California Sunday in three hours, 21 minutes and 56 seconds in the Thousand Oaks-Westlake Village-Agoura Hills area of Greater Los Angeles. The effort landed him in fifth overall in this continent's most prestigious cycling event.

Ten BC Games Alumni Contribute to Strong Second Place Showing at Pan Am Junior Field Hockey Championships
Canada, represented by a BC team that included 10 BC Games alumni, made an international statement late last month by advancing to the championship final of the Pan Am junior field hockey championships in Montevideo, Uruguay.

BC Games Alumni Hesjedal Second in Amstel Gold Race
Victoria cyclist Ryder Hesjedal placed second in the prestigious Amstel Gold race at Valkenburg, Netherlands. He completed the 257-kilometre race in six hours 22 minutes 56 seconds. He was just two seconds behind the winner.

Terrace Winter Games Medalist Sweeps Provincial Championships
Thirteen year-old Mikayla Martin cleaned up at the BC Alpine provincial championships last week, walking away with a total of seven first place finishes including the championship title.

Terrace BC Winter Games Participant selected for Team B.C.
13-year-old Alena Mayer was selected to play hockey for Team B.C. following her recent participation at the Terrace 2010 BC Winter Games. Mayer, who attends Williams Lake Secondary School, is now preparing for a series of tournaments with her new teammates.

Curling Gold for BC Games Alumni
BC Games alumni, Darryl Neighbour (athlete at 2006 BC Winter Games) and Jim Armstrong (who coached at the 1997 BC Winter Games) and their teammates Ina Forrest, Sonja Gaudet, and Bruno Yizek end the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games competition in top spot, taking the gold.

Silver for BC Games Alumni at 2010 Paralympic Winter Games
Josh Dueck of Vernon BC took sliver in Alpine Skiing - Men's Slalom, Sitting in Whistler. Josh is a BC Games alumni having competed in in Skiing - Alpine (Disabled) at the 2006 BC Winter Games. Previously he also coached Skiing - Freestyle at the 2004 Games.

Seabrook helps Canada Win Gold!
In February, 2000 Brent Seabrook played on the gold medal team representing Fraser River-Delta at the BC Games. Last week, he won a gold medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics! Further proof that the future is playing now at the BC Games!

Speedskating Gold for Games Alumni Morrison
Games Alumni Denny Morrison along with Lucas Makowsky of Regina and Mathieu Giroux of Montreal won the gold in the speedskating pursuit final against the USA. (

Games Alumni place 5th and 12th in Olympic Skicross
BC Games Alumni Kelsey Serwa and Julia Murray placed 5th and 12th respectively in women's skicross competition at the Vancouver Olympics.  Teammate Ashleigh McIvor took the gold. (

The sun has finally come out on Cypress Mountain, and BC Games alumni Maelle Ricker, 31, of North Vancouver has won gold in women's snowboarding cross. (

Minister Announces BC Games Board
The Province is adding four new members and renewing the appointments of three members of the BC Games Society board of directors, announced Minister of Healthy Living and Sport Ida Chong.

BC Games Co-Chair Inducted to BC Hockey Hall of Fame
BC Hockey executive (and BC Games Society Co Chair) Frank Lento, Former Vancouver Canucks captain Trevor Linden, veteran NHL winger Dallas Drake, and junior hockey owner/executive Bruce Hamilton have been named to the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame.

BC Games Alumni Headed for Worlds
Rosslander and Black Jack Skier Rebecca Reid, 17, is preparing to race in the Under 23 Junior World Championships Jan. 24-31 in Hinterzarten, Germany. Reid is joined by Joey Burton from the Overlander Ski club in Kamloops.  Burton won two Bronze medals at the Port Alberni 2004 BC Winter Games and Reid scored two silver medals at the 2006 BC Winter Games in Trail.

Cycling Fans Name Hesjedal Best of Decade
The 2000s began for Ryder Hesjedal on the mountain bike, continued on the road and conclude with the BC Games Alumni being named Canadian cyclist of the decade. The quietly intense Hesjedal, 2003 world mountain biking silver medallist who in 2008 and 2009 became the fourth Canadian to ride in the Tour de France, was given the honour in balloting by Canadian fans conducted on CanadianCyclist.com (

Julia Murray Narrowly Misses The Podium On Second Day Of Racing In Innichen/San Candido, Italy
December 22, 2009 - It was a successful day for BC Games Alumni Julia Murray (Whistler, BC) as she narrowly missed the podium placing 4th in the second World Cup race of the 2009/2010 season. Team mate and yesterdays silver medalist Ashleigh McIvor (Whistler, BC) posted another strong result finishing just out of the finals in 5th spot. (

BC Games Alumni Among Athletes Selected for Softball Canada Junior Women’s National Team Athlete Pool
Samantha Olexa (Delta, BC) and Jacqueline Omichinski (Abbotsford, BC) were both selected to the Junior Women’s National Team Athlete Pool for the 2010 season. These players will attend a Selection Camp early in the Summer of 2010 (location and dates to be determined). (

Swimmer and BC Games Alumni Brian Hill Wins Bronze on the World Stage
Benoit Huot of Montreal collected his fourth silver medal of the competition and Brian Hill of Duncan, B.C., and Brianna Nelson of Victoria each added a bronze on Saturday to conclude the Para-swimming world short course championships for swimmers with a disability in Rio de Janeiro. (

Canadian Record and Gold Medal for BC Games Alumni Brent Hayden
Brent Hayden of Vancouver won the gold medal, bettered his Canadian short-course record and swam the third-fastest time ever in the men's 100-metre freestyle on Saturday in Berlin at the fourth stop on the World Cup swimming circuit. (

Exciting New BC Games Program at Field Hockey BC
FHBC recently ratified the BC Games Program for 2010 as the official Under 14 Girls High Performance Program for 2009/2010. In line with the Long-Term Athlete Development Model; this program will include two training phases leading to the BC Games as the competitive peak. (

Winter Games Office Opens
The countdown to the 2010 BC Winter Games in Terrace is now underway.  The games office was officially opened on Saturday at Mountainview School on Bailey Street, and Committee President Peter Weeber says he's getting more and more excited about hosting the big event. (

BC Games Alumni Help Canada win bronze at Baseball World Cup
BC Games Alumni (Chris Kissock, Brett Lawrie, Brooks McNiven and James Van Ostrand) helped Canada win bronze at Baseball World Cup. Canada broke out for three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed to earn a 6-2 win over Puerto Rico.  First baseman Jimmy Van Ostrand homered and drove in three runs in the victory Saturday at Grosseto, Italy.  "They never quit," said Canada manager Ernie Whitt. "They deserve all the credit. With three-hour bus trips every day, it was just a grind. But no one complained and they came out and played hard."  Cuba and the U.S. will play in the tournament final Sunday, after which all of the medals will be handed out. (

Ryder Hesjedal wins 12th stage of Spanish Vuelta
Penticton 1995 BC Summer Games Alumni and Victoria native Ryder Hesjedal won the mountainous 12th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Friday while Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde remained the overall leader.  Hesjedal, who rides for Garmin-Slipstream, finished the 180-kilometre leg in five hours 34 minutes 31 seconds - one second faster than Spanish rider David Garcia.  Hesjedal is the first Canadian to win a stage of the Spanish stage race and the first Canadian to win a Grand Tour stage since Steve Bauer in 1988.  "It was really difficult," Hesjedal told velonews.com. "You never know what's going to happen after the rest day. I just felt great all day." (

BC Games Alumni in the "Show"
The Seattle Mariners called up BC Games alumni and Olympian Mike Saunders from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainers of the Pacific Coast League.   The Victoria, BC native was hitting .310 with 15 doubles, 2 triples, 13 home runs and 32 RBI in 64 games with the Rainiers. “Michael is a versatile player capable of playing all three outfield positions,” says Mariners GM Jack Zdurienick.  “We've been very pleased with his development and work this season and felt he earned the right to join the big league club at this time.” Mike went 2-for-4 in his major league debut against the Cleveland Indians and is fitting in well with the Mariners. 153 BC Games alumni, including Flag Bearer Isaac Bernard, are preparing for the start of the 2009 Canada Games in PEI.

Alumni Success
BC Games Alumni are making their mark on the world stage.
-Brent Hayden, (1998 BC Summer Games) and World Champion, beat American superstar Michael Phelps to win the men’s 100-metre freestyle at the Santa Clara Grand Prix swimming competition.
-Ryder Hesjedal (1995 BC Summer Games) began his second Tour de France on July 5th. He is the 4th Canadian rider in the Tour’s history and will compete in the elite field, including Lance Armstrong.
-Riley McCormick (2002 BC Summer Games) ended a successful junior career with a victory on the men's 10-metre tower at the 2009  junior national diving championships and went on to a ninth place finish at the 2009 World Aquatic Championships.
