The 2010 BC Olympic & Paralympic Youth Leadership Academy will be held during the 2010 BC Winter Games in Terrace. The 2010 Academy, developed for student leaders with an affinity to sport, will run from March 4 to 7.
The Academy presents delegates with opportunities to hone and test their leadership skills in a fun and safe environment, surrounded by the excitement of the Terrace 2010 BC Winter Games.
The 50 delegates, from all areas of the province, will travel to the Academy from their hometown, on transportation arranged by the BC Games Society. Once they arrive, they will sleep in school classrooms, which are converted into dorms, and eat with the BC Games athletes in the cafeteria. They will also be part of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and have the chance to attend other special events with Games participants.
In addition to the Games events that the delegates participate in, they will also be exposed to informative and interactive workshops and training sessions. These sessions will include the History of the Olympics, public speaking, the Road to the Olympics and Paralympics, and inclusion activities. The delegates will also have a chance to spend some time with Games volunteers, which will give them a "real taste" of the Games and a glimpse into the amount of work and planning that is required to stage an event like the BC Winter Games.
The highlight of the Academy is always the final evening's Dinner of Champions, which brings the delegates together with sporting heroes and other special guests from the community and beyond for a formal banquet. The evening will feature a guest speaker that is sure to inspire the delegates.
