Graduates of the BC Olympic & Paralympic Youth Leadership Academy are encouraged to TAKE THE CHALLENGE HOME following each Academy. Alumni take experiences gained from participation in the BC Olympic & Paralympic Youth Leadership Academy and make a difference at home and in their communities.
Suggestions for alumni to consider are:
- make a presentation to a class or local service club about their experience,
- volunteer to assist with an Olympic/Paralympic activity in a local elementary school or recreational program, or
- write an article for the local newspaper, etc.
These ideas, in addition to those that the delegates brainstorm during the Academy, are only a starting point. Alumni are invited to complete the challenge however they see fit. Once alumni have completed the challenge, they are asked to share their experiences with the Academy Steering Committee so that they can see how alumni were motivated by their attendance at the Academy.
In March, delegates from the 2010 Academy in Terrace were invited to Take the Challenge Home. If you are a delegate from this Academy and have a story/experience to tell, please complete the Take the Challenge Home form or send an email with your information to info@bcacademy.ca. Photos are welcome. We look forward to hearing from you.
The following delegates from the 2008 Academy in Kimberley-Cranbrook took the Challenge Home:
Emily Rowell from Langley coaches a mini-rugby team of children ages 4 to 7.
Allison Burton from Sooke organized and participated in a youth forum at her high school. She also created a group on Facebook for the Academy.
Helen Ip from Victoria has taken on the responsibility of coaching badminton to junior players in her community.
Juli McColloch from Vancouver joined a student committee at her school that is organizing a leadership conference in the fall.
If you have any questions about the challenge, please contact the Academy at info@bcacademy.ca.
