The
Spirit of Competition is Alive in the
North!
Since
1975, communities across
northern BC have embraced the purpose of the Northern
BC Winter Games Society "to provide an opportunity for all
northern residents to compete in organized sport" and have hosted
their neighbours in the spirit of friendship and
competition.
Originally
staged to create new opportunities for
students and to encourage grassroots sport
programs, the Northern BC Winter Games,
under the leadership of the Northern BC
Winter Games Society, have become an annual
athletic, social, and cultural exchange among
the people of northern BC.
The
participants come from six regions from 100
Mile House and north. Click

Every
new Host Community undertakes the daunting
task of preparing for the Games and each
community rises to the challenge, but not
without a great deal of effort. A
tremendous amount of time and dedication from
hundreds of volunteers, over a two-year
period, go into making the Games
successful. Without the support of the
volunteers who organize the events, billet the
athletes, provide transportation, keep score
and various other tasks, the Games would not
be possible. Click
here for an organizational chart of the
Host Community Board. Event management support,
resources, and ongoing assistance are provided
to the Host Community through the BC Games
Society.
At
the moment a community becomes a Host,
fundraising becomes a very important
aspect. Inevitably it is support of the
local community, the generous donations of
private industry and business coupled with
government grants which make the Games such a
spectacular success.
For
the Host Community, the Games are a chance to
show off with pride, a job well done.
For athletes, it's about participating in
competition and meeting people from across the
region. Yes, a few triumphant athletes
will take home medals, but all involved will
take home memories of new friends and a sense
of accomplishment.
