After dropping their very first set of the Games, the Fraser Valley squad went on to win its three opening games Friday, and be the early Games leaders in boys’ volleyball action at the Columbia Bible College gym.

In their early game, the Valley team lost the initial set 15-25 to Vancouver Coastal, before re-grouping and winning the next two sets, 25-13 and 15-9. The next game had the same pattern: losing the opening set 11-15 to Vancouver Island-Central Coast, then taking next two 25-9 and 15-7. The third game saw the Valley team take a comfortable 25-13, 25-15 straight set victory over Thompson-Okanagan.

Coach Jason Warkentin noted his team has been building after a slow start in the initial games. “We have this thing, the ‘Three-Cs’: community, communication and compete. Those are the things we focus on (in games), along with skills.”

In other action Friday: Vancouver Coastal won a three set victory over Fraser River (19-25, 25-18, 15-13); Cariboo-North east earned victories over Vancouver Island Central Coast(25-21, 29 -27) and Kootneys (26-28, 25-3, 15-9).

Each team plays the other six teams in the tournament once, before the playoff positions are determined for Saturday afternoon, and medal games Sunday morning (at the UFV Envision Centre.)
