Baseball’s gold medal game was an offence-laden affair, as Vancouver Coastal defeated Vancouver Island-Central Coast 9-7 in a crowd-pleaser played in perfect baseball conditions at Delair Park.

Noting offence was key in the win, Vancouver Coastal Coach Cam Frick added “our defence didn’t really show up today. We got behind in the first, but our offence just battled; we had guys on base every inning.”

Starting pitcher Mackenzie Madjik had a great game on the mound noted Frick. Vancouver Coastal was up 9-3 after six innings, but saw Vancouver Island-Central Coast draw within three and have runners on base in the last inning, before reliever Damon Hutchings closed the game out for Vancouver Coastal.

“Our whole strategy in this type of tournament is to go out there, have a good time, and swing the bat. We have a lot of great hitters on this team and they have to be looking to swing early—and they did.”

Frick singled out Sean Sasaki for an outstanding effort in the final. After being injured and sent to hospital early in tournament he was on field for the final. “He’s a tough guy, a competitor; he worked his way into the game today barely able to walk’” said Frick. “He battled and scored a couple of runs today. That was just huge”.

The Bronze medal game was also a high-scoring outing, with Fraser River winning 9-5 over the Fraser Valley zone squad at McMillan Park.
