BC Games Alumni receive Athlete of the Year Awards

The annual Athlete of the Year Awards ceremony and gala dinner recognizes BC’s best amateur athletes, coaches, and officials for outstanding performances in their sport over the 2012 season. Each finalist was nominated by their Provincial Sport Organization, high school or university, and selected by a committee of BC sportswriters, broadcasters, athletes and amateur sport experts.

25 BC Games alumni were chosen as finalists and five alumni were recognized as the winners in their respective categories.

Athlete with a Disability
Trevor Hirschfield (Vancouver, BC) – Wheelchair Rugby (2002 BC Summer Games)

Coach of the Year
Peter Lawless (Victoria, BC) – Wheelchair Sports (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 BC Summer Games)

College Athlete of the Year
Jenna Ralston (Mission, BC) – Basketball (2002 BC Summer Games)

High School Male Athlete of the Year
Fergus Hall (Victoria, BC) – Rugby, Soccer (2008 BC Summer Games)

University Athlete of the Year
Ben Ball (Abbotsford, BC) – Volleyball (2004 BC Summer Games)

The Penticton Vees Hockey Team was recognized as the Team of the Year.  Four BC Games alumni were part of the team - Wade Murphy, Logan Johnston, Nick Buchanan, Kyle Beaulieu.

As announced previously, Mike Mason (2000 BC Summer Games) was awarded the Harry Jerome Comeback Award.

The BC Winter and BC Summer Games are the first multisport experience for BC's emerging high performance athletes and are an important training ground for coaches and officials.  Many BC Games alumni move on to provincial and national teams including 40 athletes who represented Canada at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
