The Opening Ceremony of the BC Winter Games kicked off the 27th edition of this event which is being hosted this year in Mission.

The ceremony featured local entertainment as well as Mission’s own Olympic bronze medallist in swimming, Brent Hayden, who spoke to the athletes about how the BC Games was his starting place before moving on to the national team and international success.

Over 1800 participants from every corner of the province will compete at the BC Winter Games over the next three days.  The athletes are the best young developing high performance athletes this province has to offer and the BC Winter Games are their first opportunity to experience multi-sport Games.

Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Coralee Oakes, was at the ceremony and had the honour of lighting the torch and delcaring the Games offically open.

This is the first time the District of Mission has hosted the BC Games and a team of volunteers has been working throughout the past year and a half to plan to welcome the province to their community.  Over 2000 games time volunteers will be in action this weekend doing everything from transportation, food services, entertainment, and the sport competitions themselves.

The timing of the BC Winter Games is particularly exciting this year as it coincides with the final weekend of the Sochi Olympics.  There are 13 BC Games alumni on the Canadian Olympic Team in Sochi including double medalist speed skater, Denny Morrison.

All events are free and open to the public so come out and watch the next generation of Canadian sport heroes in action.  For more information about the Games including schedules and results visit www.bcgames.org.
