Jessica Telizyn, representing Cariboo-North East (Zone 8) at the BC Summer Games in Nanaimo, decided last year that she would become a triathlete. An accomplished Irish dancer who enjoyed many successes in competitions throughout North America, Telizyn thought it would be neat to add triathlete to her growing resume.

"How many people can say they’re both an Irish dancer and a triathlete?”

Jessica decided she had better learn how to swim and commented on how her grandmother Bonnie Lawson had helped her with swimming. Given that there were no coaches in her region to train her, Jessica developed a training schedule on her own so that she could also become a better cyclist and runner. Her mother, Kim Telizyn, reported that Jessica’s younger brother Josh, “would serve as a rabbit” by beginning a bike race ahead of Jessica, so that she could eventually overtake him. Josh said that she improved greatly, as she trained in cycling twice a week.

Now that Jessica has participated in four triathlon events at the BC Summer Games, she feels she has learned a lot more about the sport. She states that she still was competitive and that she enjoyed the learning curve. The experience has been amazing! Everyone has been so friendly! A triathlon coach from Comox provided tips as she struggled during one of the bike races. She has also appreciated her family’s support. Her parents and her brother travelled with her from Fort St. John, joined by her grandparents from Maple Ridge. Family friends from Summerland have also been cheering for Jessica. Her Irish dance teacher, Joe Watt from the Watt School of Irish Dance came to Nanaimo to watch Jessica compete. All are proud of Jessica’s drive, perseverance, and resilience.

Jessica is a go-getter who declares, “I’m all about being original!” There are undoubtedly many more adventures to come for this artist and athlete.
