Exactly one year from now, Nanaimo will be hit by a tsunami of athletic energy when the 2014 BC Summer Games lands on July 17. Residents are warned not to take cover, but to come out in droves and welcome this wave of visitors with typical Nanaimo hospitality.

Games President Jeff Lott stated, “Nanaimo is not a community to be overwhelmed, so we’re confident that the 12 months we have left to plan will go smoothly.”

The Games require a plethora of goods and services that presents the kind of shopping list a small army would be expected to produce, here’s a sample:

  • Up to 3,500 foamies where our province’s best young athletes, coaches and officials will sleep
  • 6,875 feet of electric cords
  • Nearly 48,000 meals served
  • 2,100 medals to be awarded in 290 medal presentation ceremonies
  • Up to 8,000 pieces of luggage transferred
  • About 47,000 bus transfers
  • 525 hours of sport event competition

The stated purpose of the Games is to provide an opportunity for the development of athletes, coaches, and officials in preparation for higher levels of competition like the Canada Games and Olympic or Paralympic Games. There are 19 sports represented in the BC Summer Games involving up to 3,900 athletes, coaches and officials from all over the province. The local economic impact has been estimated at about $2.6 million.

This fall, a Countdown Clock will be unveiled as volunteer recruitment picks up speed. Organizers are seeking around 3,200 volunteers with a wide range of skills and talents to ensure another Games success. There are many areas to volunteer in, with time commitments ranging from a few hours during the Games to assistance with planning and preparation over the next 12 months.

Many other promotions and events are planned for the lead up to next July 17 – 20, 2014 when the city comes alive with athletes and volunteers participating in this biennial provincial celebration of sport. Volunteer registration will be available in the fall at www.bcgames.org.
