BC Coaches Week is September 15-22 and the BC Games Society is proud to recognize and thank the hundreds of coaches who dedicate their time and expertise to bring BC’s best young athletes to the BC Winter and BC Summer Games.

760 coaches were led zone teams to the 2012 BC Winter and 2012 BC Summer Games.  Head coaches are required to have NCCP Level 2 certification (or equivalent).  For the BC Winter Games over 88% of coaches achieved this standard – the highest compliance every for a BC Winter Games.  We know that these trained coaches are providing BC Games athletes with valuable experiences and training that will provide a strong base from which they will move to higher levels of competition such as the Canada Games and ultimately the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

The BC Games are also a training ground for coaches to learn new skills and move on to higher levels of competition.  Coaches such as Tommy McLeod (Diving) and Allison Dobb (Rowing) attended the BC Summer Games and are now National Team coaches and were at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

For the past six years, a successful partnership between Coaches BC, Promotion Plus and the BC Games Society has supported female coaches through the Coaching Mentor/Apprentice Program.  At the 2012 BC Summer Games, six apprentice coaches in the sports of athletics, canoe kayak, soccer, triathlon, volleyball, and wrestling were paired with mentor coaches to learn new coaching techniques in a multisport Games environment.

At the 2012 BC Winter Games female coaches accounted for 45% of all head coaches and at the 2012 BC Summer Gmaes 35% of the head coaches were female.
