Coaches Week in British Columbia is September 14-22 and the BC Games Society is taking the opportunity to say THANK YOU!

The BC Games are a memorable and life changing event and it is our certified coaches who play an enormous role in providing the athletes with a positive opportunity to learn new skills and develop both on and off the field of play.  It is through this coach leadership that we are building the next generation of Canadian heroes as well as cementing the importance of leading active healthy lives.

BC Games head coaches are required to have an NCCP Level II Certification (or equivalent) and each year the percentage of coaches who have achieved this certification level has increased.  At the 2012 BC Winter Games 88% of BC Winter Games coaches and 92% of BC Summer Games coaches had the required certification.

As an important part of BC’s athlete development pathway, the Games are equally important to the development of coaches.  At each BC Games, 75-85% of the coaches are new to the event.  That means that every year hundreds of BC coaches are gaining certification, skills, and experiences through the BC Games.  We see the positive effects of this development at events like the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, where 48% of the Team BC coaches had previously attended a BC Games.

Female coach development is also a priority and a successful partnership with the BC Games Society, Coaches BC and Promotion Plus supports female coaches.  The Coaching Mentor/Apprentice Program pairs apprentices with mentor coaches to learn new coaching techniques in a multisport Games environment.  This program is again being offered for the 2014 BC Winter and BC Summer Games.

Coaches Week is an annual initiative of Coaches BC and viaSport.  You can get involved by registering an event, sharing stories and photos and saying thank you to a great coach!
