New West athlete captures gold in karate

In the karate competitions of the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games, 13-year-old Mitchell Dann from Zone 4 Fraser River took home gold medals in heavy weight kumite advanced and team kumite and achieved personal bests during the Games.

“Before the Games, I was more like a quiet fighter,” said Dann, “but over the Games, I improved a lot and now I’m fighting with a lot more power and energy.”

He added that he made lots of new friends during the BC Winter Games and that it was a great experience for him. “The best moment for me was feeling the deciding last punch when I scored,” said Dann excited.

About his plans for the future he said, that he would love to go to Provincials and try to get on a BC-Team to go to the nationals.

  • Junior Coach – Declan Riddle, Zone 2
