Biathlete Hunter Sones was presented the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence by Vernon Monashee MLA Eric Foster at the Closing Ceremony of the Greater Vernon 2012 BC Winter Games.
Sones, 14, from Garibaldi Highlands, has been participating in biathlon since the age of five.  He has medaled in over 90 percent of the 24 BC Cup events he has competed in.  This weekend he won two BC Winter Games Bronze medals in the Junior Boys Sprint and individual events.  Besides a busy schedule of training and competing Hunter coaches public biathlon at Whistler Olympic Park and conducts biathlon lessons during the summer.  At Christmas he volunteered as a cross country ski coach for beginner adults with the proceeds going to the local food bank.  Hunter's strong desire, and his goal, is to become a National and International team member with an eye on competing in either the 2020 or 2024 Olympic Winter Games.
The W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence recognizes one BC Winter Games athlete for their achievement in sport.  Nominees were evaluated on major sport accomplishments, future potential and ambition in sport, and leadership.  Sones was nominated by Biathlon BC and chosen by a BC Games Society selection panel.
The W.R. Bennett Athlete Excellence Award was named in honour of the former Premier of British Columbia, William Bennett, who was instrumental in starting the BC Summer and BC Winter Games program in 1978.  The award includes a $2,500 bursary to use towards future sport expenses or post secondary education.
"While the award recognizes excellence, the financial contribution will further support Hunter as he continues to train toward national representation.  We hope this investment and the experience of the BC Summer Games will be a winning combination in the future for Hunter," said BC Games Society President and CEO, Kelly Mann.
