Margart Kilner was recently stumbled across a navy blue blazer her late husband, Frank, received from the BC Games in 1985, when he served as Director of Security. The blazer was in pristine condition, and even contained her husband’s perfectly preserved volunteer badge in the pocket.

The garment brought back a flood of memories, with Kilner recalling what a positive experience her husband had at the Games. “I was in awe of the amount of work and planning it took behind the scenes to pull off the Games, but Frank was perfectly suited for it. He was used to organizing and directing a lot of people through his role with the RCMP,” she said.

Frank Kilner was born in Nanaimo and first served with the Vancouver provincial police before joining the RCMP in the 1950s when they took over the policing in BC. After a long career, he eventually settled back in Nanaimo, serving as staff sergeant and second in command of the RCMP from 1974-1976. Kilner retired from the RCMP in 1976.

Mrs. Kilner contacted 2014 BC Summer Games organizers to arrange to donate the jacket to Games President and retired RCMP chief, Jeff Lott.

Games staff were touched by Kilner’s gesture and quickly arranged a surprise blazer presentation to Lott. Margaret was thrilled that she was able to donate the blazer and remember her husband, as his memorial in the paper was quite small. “I really appreciated the opportunity for Frank to be remembered in this way,” she said.

The fact that she was able to donate the garment to Lott was icing on the cake. Given his background with the RCMP and the Games, Kilner felt he was the “perfect fit” to receive this gift.

“This was such a special gesture, given our connection both with the Games and the RCMP” says Jeff Lott, president of the BC Games. “I will wear this jacket during the Games with great pride in memory of Mr. Kilner.”
