The host squad started the boys soccer portion of the BC Summer Games on the right foot, edging out the Kootenays in the opening match.

Abbotsford’s Jovan Gill scored the only goal of the game, midway through the second half, to give the Fraser Valley squad a 1-0 victory

The Valley dominated the game, getting chance after chance, but could not find the back of the net.

After a scoreless first half, the Valley continued the pressure, keeping play in the Kootenays’ end of the field.

While there were some tense moments towards the end of the contest, the Valley defence kept the Kootenays away from the net.

Alex Newby, head coach of the valley squad said the game didn’t go as planned.

“We wanted to score goals, but it didn’t come out that way. We had lots and lots of chances Now we have to start finishing them off”

Newly is expecting to face increasingly tougher competition as the games go on.

“The scary thing about soccer is sometimes you can dominate the play, but one shot could cost you,” he said.

The Fraser Valley gets back on the pitch at 4 p.m. today when they take on Thompson-Okanagan.

In other boys soccer action, Thompson-Okanagan defeated Cariboo North East 3-0.
