Fraser Valley's (Zone 3) Elyse Hodel, who hails from Surrey, took home the gold medal on Sunday’s equestrian jumping competition of the BC Summer Games in Nanaimo.

Although Hodel had “horse show nerves” this morning before competing, she managed to have a clear first round and an impressive jump-off with a time of 41.49 seconds.

The rider and her eight year-old Holsteiner Thoroughbred, Captivate, have been a pair since November.

When asked how she prepared for the Games, Hodel disclosed that she worked on a lot of flatwork in order to be able to control her horse better when jumping, and went to many competitions to gain experience.

“Tyson used to be really spooky, so going to lots of different shows and riding in different rings has helped us prepare for the Games,” Hodel said.

Hodel is pleased with her and Captivate’s successes so far and is eager for more competitions this summer.

Hodel and Captivate will be seen next in August at Thunderbird Show Park.
