The 2012 BC Winter Games in Greater Vernon left a substantial financial legacy which was invested in local sport organizations as well as a number of community programs.  Two Vernon arts organizations are putting legacy grants to work in new exhibits.

The Caetani Cultural Centre is located in downtown Vernon and is a venue for visual artists from around Canada and the world to explore a diverse range of arts practices, theories and experiences.  The $5000 investment from the BC Winter Games Legacy Fund was used to fund an Artist in Residence Program.  For July and August 2013, Vernon photographic artist, Brittney Bergen mentored five local youth who were each given a camera to document sports and cultural activities in the region.  Brittney will be creating a sports and cultural themed piece for final installation in a public space, along with a collaborative work produced by the participating youth.  Read more at www.caetaniculturalcentre.org

The Vernon Cultural Arts Centre also received funds from the BC Winter Games and has begun work on the creation of an indoor/outdoor multimedia mural.  Artists Gale Woodhouse and James Postill are combining their artistic talents and styles for this project.  The outside mural is being painted by Postill in a fresco-secco style and will be the first public mural of its kind in the Okanagan.  The interior, by Woodhouse, will be a clay relief mural/donor wall that will incorporate glass, metal, stone and fibre throughout the work. Youth will make stamps that will be included in the mural.

Gale Woodhouse was interviewed by the Vernon Morning Star. “The mural project is designed to reflect community involvement, support and participation – exactly what the Vernon Arts Centre is,” said Woodhouse, adding the mural will incorporate what is offered at VCAC and have a mixture of organic elements, reflecting the geographical setting of Polson Park.
