Fernando was selected as this year’s recipient due to his long service in support of the BC Winter Games, beginning in 1981 when he helped lead Karate BC and the Vancouver Island – Sunshine Coast athletes to success at the Games.   He has attended the BC Winter Games as a coach, the Assistant Provincial Advisor, and now in his current role as Provincial Advisor.

Fernando has played an important role in the success of karate at the BC Winter Games and to the growth of the sport overall.  He was instrumental in implementing a Junior Officials Program at the Games beginning with the Port Alberni 2004 BC Winter Games.  Another key initiative, and one we hope will be emulated by other Provincial Sport Organizations, is the launch of Karate BC’s Junior Coach Program scheduled for the Greater Vernon 2012 BC Winter Games.

The BC Games Society gratefully acknowledges Fernando’s leadership.  He takes on all of his tasks and roles them with respect, integrity, a sense of humour, and with tremendous wisdom.

Each member and partner of Sport BC selects a recipient who has shown outstanding commitment and dedication to their organization.  These individuals are honoured at the annual Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards.
