Judo field narrows as competition heats up

Campbell River judoka Jamiliya Wellard is not to be trifled with – nor can you afford to take your eyes of her for even one second when she’s competing.

The 14-year-old, who’s representing Zone 6 at the 2016 Penticton BC Winter Games, dispatched her first opponent of the day in under a minute Friday.

“I threw her for a waza-ari, which is like a half point, and then I held her down in pin, and then I got another waza-ari, and if you get two you win,” she explained afterwards for those who couldn’t keep up.

Wellard is among 16 judo athletes from her zone, some of whom she’s squared off against on the mat in the past, but is now enjoying their newfound camaraderie.

“It’s really fun. It’s cool sitting with the team,” she said.
