Cody Smith scored eight points to help lead Fraser River Zone 4 to a 29-28 win and a bronze medal in Special Olympics basketball.

Smith scored the game-winning basket with less than 30 seconds left in the game.

Kyle Lifton led Fraser Valley Zone 3 in scoring with 14 points.

"It was a layup,” said Smith from Surrey, on scoring the game winning shot. “We played strong defense, offence and steals."

A threat from Coquitlam teammate Ben Felling seemed to have some impact on the team’s bronze medal win.

"I told my team if we didn't win I will not play basketball ever again," he said.

"I thought they played their hearts out today,” praised coach Brandon Schmidt. “Our first couple of games it took some getting to know each other but by the end we were all playing well together and things finally meshed."

Smith was among those who showed some growth during the Games.

"He has put up a few baskets for us this weekend and is a good post player,” said Schmidt. “He has improved quite a bit since the start of the tournament."

The game’s close score had the coach’s heart pounding right to the end.

"That was exciting,” he said after the game.

"It is always exciting to see a close finish. We came in wanting our team to have a lot of fun but the players also love that competitive side of it so we tried to get them pumped up and motivated by reminding them they were fighting for a medal."
