Cassidy MacPherson and Jia Kim of Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club shot out to an early lead in their first BC Summer Games event of Friday morning.

Both did well as they circled a course of buoys in Bedford Channel off Fort Langley.

MacPherson and Kim didn’t have long to rest after the 2,000 metre womens open kayak race.

They had four more races scheduled for Friday.

“We train a lot, six hours a day,” said Kim, 14. They’re on the water three to four of those hours, five to six days a week.

The Zone 3 team mates disagreed on which part of the course.

“It was pretty easy other than the turns,” said MacPherson.

“I think the turns were the easiest for me,” said Kim. “I hate paddling long distances.”

This isn’t their first provincial-level meet, but it is the first BC Summer Games for MacPherson. Kim competed at the last games in Nanaimo.

Both girls have been involved in paddling sports for the past six years.

Paddling events began at about 8:30 a.m. on Bedford Channel Friday, and were expected to wrap up with medal ceremonies at around 2 p.m.

More competitions, including rowing, canoe, and kayak races, were to be held on Saturday starting at 7:30 a.m.
