No record, but golden throw for Chong

For someone who had just won the gold medal, Jarrett Chong wasn’t too enthused.

Chong won gold in the boys javelin competition on Friday morning at Rotary Stadium, the first day of the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford.

The 15-year-old from Port Coquitlam (zone 4) took the gold medal with a throw of 51.68m.

That was more than three metres ahead of the silver medalist, Lantville’s Ben Toth (zone 6) who’s best throw came in at 48.38m.

Taking the bronze medal was Revelstoke’s Shea Bibby of zone 2. Bibby’s top throw was 45.93m.

And while Chong was more than happy he had won the gold medal, his enthusiasm was dampened by the fact he came a few metres short of setting the meet record in the event. Chong had beaten that mark at a previous meet so he knew he was capable of setting a new record.

“It was just something to beat, and I know I could have done it,” he said.

Up next for Chong will be the hammer throw event.
