Former foes become friends at BC Winter Games

After facing off against each other for years, Kootenay (Zone 1) gymnasts Brianne Stefani and Emery Hoko now find themselves in an unusual situation at the 2016 Penticton BC Winter Games.

“We’re not competing against each other now; we’re competing together,” said Stefani, 11, who lives in Nelson.

“It’s fun. We all make each other laugh.”

Hoko, a 12-year-old Kimberley resident, said she’s enjoying spreading her wings at the Games, which are the largest winter multi-sport event in B.C.,

“It’s so fun just being independent, without your parents,” she said with a laugh.

Both girls are competing in the Games for the first time and qualified for the finals Saturday: Stefani in floor and beam, and Hoko in beam.
