2016 BC Summer Games Torchlighting

It's almost officially time to light up the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games.
The Torchlighting Ceremony will take place on April 13, marking 100 days till the beginning of the Games in Abbotsford.

"The Torchlighting Ceremony is really a rallying cry for the community," said Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games President Steve Carlton.  "We're going to light the ceremonial torch at city hall and it's a chance for all the team to come together with the public and bring awareness to the Games for the community."

The public outdoor celebration begins at 8:00 pm, with the torchlighting taking place at 8:30 pm at Thunderbird Plaza.

Robert Bateman brings Games theme to life

Robert Bateman

The slogan for this summer’s event is “Rise above. Reach beyond.” and Games President Steve Carlton sought out Canadian artist Robert Bateman to lend a hand. Carlton said he’s been lucky to have developed a connection with Bateman over the years.

A group of Directors were lucky enough to travel to Saltspring Island and meet Bateman at his home to see the finished artwork.  “All we gave him was the theme and he chose the eagle to represent it,” Carlton said, of the finished painting. “He explained the eagle is appropriate because it’s a common bird in our area and how it’s known for its strength, beauty, and ability to rise above its obstacles.”
