August 2016

What a Games it was!  2700 volunteers welcomed over 3200 participants for four days of exciting action at the 2016 BC Summer Games in Abbotsford.  This month we now turn our attention to our alumni taking centre stage in Rio at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Congratulations and Thank You!

Thank you Abbotsford

Participants and their families were treated to a sport event like no other at the 2016 BC Summer Games, and all served with a large helping of Abbotsford hospitality.

Thank you so much to the volunteers who contributed to the best ever BC Summer Games. Wherever I was over the weekend, volunteers were beaming and offering their services; athletes were thrilled as they competed on and in first class facilities; and families enjoyed the valley atmosphere.

While the BC Summer Games are about athlete and sport development, they have a profound effect on a city in terms of building capacity and confidence. Abbotsford has used past BC Games and other sport events to build a solid foundation of skilled volunteers, coupled with the important investments in sport infrastructure.

Residents of the City of Abbotsford should be very proud of your city and of your neighbours. Many thousands of people will long remember these BC Summer Games.  I know I will.

BC Games experience a benefit in Rio

Rod McCormick

Rod McCormick was the Operations Manager for the 2014 BC Winter Games and is now in Rio working as part of the organizing committee.  Here are a few of this thoughts about how the BC Games prepared him for this role.

"The BC Games has prepared me well for my experiences here in Rio and I wanted to tell you just how good of a job you do and how well run the BC Games Society is in helping the communities be successful.

Your template has served me well here in Rio as I am finding much of the process to be very familiar. The community is different, the people are different, but the formula is very consistent."
