Kamloops marks the countdown to the 2018 BC Winter Games

BCRPA Article

There is
a buzz in Kamloops with the excitement building to the 2018 BC Winter Games. Two exciting days of events were held to celebrate sport and mark the countdown.

The celebrations started on November 22, with more than 1,500 elementary school-aged children gathering at the Tournament Capital Centre to celebrate Olympic Day. The children were given the opportunity to try over 15 different sports, including ski jumping, biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, judo and wheelchair basketball. To culminate the day, the official BC Winter Games Torchlighting Ceremony was also held at the Tournament Capital Centre. This formal event brought together volunteers, supporters, and local athletes to hear inspirational words and motivational stories.

The celebrations continued the following day at Sun Peaks Resort, where the BC Games torch was relayed down the mountain for a second Torchlighting event. Two Olympians, Kenny Dale and Lark Frolek-Dale, were part of the event.

Powering Potential Fund supports equipment purchases

Archery Partnership

In November the BC Games Society announced $40,000 in funding to support important equipment investments for four winter sports. This funding is provided through the Society’s Powering Potential Fund which is an initiative to create new opportunities to strategically invest in projects to further develop
sport in BC.

With the 2018 BC Winter Games taking place in Kamloops, projects were identified that could assist with staging the BC Games competitions but also be a lasting legacy for ongoing event hosting in the area or across the province. Four equipment purchase projects were chosen to support the sports of biathlon, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, and snowboarding.

Team BC Unite

Show your Colours

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Lisa Beare and Parliamentary Secretary for Sport and Multiculturalism, Ravi Kahlon recognized the accomplishments of B.C. athletes and the Team BC Unite initiative at an event held at the Fairmont Empress on November 21.

This summer, Team BC athletes represented the province at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg and the 2017 North American Indigenous Games in Toronto with outstanding results.

To show co-operation and unity, the North American Indigenous Games and Canada Summer Games teams chose to come together in spirit as Team BC Unite in the lead-up to and during their respective Games.

Joy of Christmas Giving

What’s your
favourite thing about Christmas? At the BC Games Society, giving to those less fortunate than ourselves is one our favourite things.

This Christmas our wish is that everyone can share in the joy that comes from thinking of others. We know, however, that money is often tight, so we have created a $10-or-Less List with items that can make a difference to those in need. View our list here.

For an inside look at our Christmas donation project watch for our BC Games Society Christmas video coming next week!
