March 2014

Mission was the host community for the 2014 BC Winter Games which took place February 20-23.  Over 1800 participants from every corner of the province gathered for four days of exciting action.  Check out the results from the Games here.

1700 volunteers dedicated their time, energy, and hearts in planning and staging this first time event for Mission. They fed, accommodated, transported, entertained, and treated participants and guests to a memorable experience.  There was even some rare Lower Mainland snow arranged to add to the wintery feel!

The collective effort of volunteers, businesses, government, and organizations working together provided once again a first rate BC Games experience for everyone involved.

Congratulations and thank you Mission!  Next up are the Nanaimo 2014 BC Summer Games, July 17-20.

BC Winter Games Week

February 17 to 23 was officially proclaimed “BC Winter Games Week” by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Judith Guichon.  This is the first time there has been an official proclamation of BC Winter Games week by the Province of BC.  Pictured above are Kelly Mann, BC Games Society and District of Mission Mayor, Ted Adlem.

“We are grateful to the Province of BC for making this proclamation and solidifying the importance of the Games to the province and to the thousands of people who are involved,” said Kelly Mann, President and CEO of the BC Games Society.

W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence

WR Bennett

The W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence recognizes one BC Winter Games athlete for their achievement in sport and leadership.

Surrey curler Tyler Tardi was announced as the recipient of the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence for the 2014 BC Winter Games and presented the award by MLAs Simon Gibson and Mark Dalton at the Closing Ceremony.

Tyler is an up and coming B.C. curler who skipped his team to the bronze medal at the BC Winter Games. At just 15 years old, he already has high goals including one day representing Canada on the world stage but, he is looking next to qualify for the 2015 Canada Winter Games at the playdowns taking place in March.

Celebrating 25 Years of Partnership

Jazz 25

The BC Games Society is pleased to recognize and celebrate 25 years of partnership with Jazz Aviation.

Given the challenges of the airline industry, especially in the last 10 years, Jazz has continued to be a Corporate Partner of the BC Games Society supporting our athletes, volunteers, and communities. From the original days as Air BC and then with Air Canada and now Jazz Aviation, the company has had an unwavering belief in the importance of the BC Games for youth and communities.

Six Alumni competing at Paralympics

Six BC Games and Team BC alumni have been named to the Canadian Paralympic Team for the Paralympic Games which take place March 7-16.

Sports for athletes with a disability have been integrated in the BC Games and Canada Games for many years providing our up and coming Paralympians with a valuable competitive opportunity.

Congratulations and best of luck to Para Alpine Skiers, Caleb Brousseau, Josh Dueck, Matt Hallat, Braydon Luscombe as well as Wheelchair Curlers Jim Armstrong and Sonja Gaudet.
