January 2016

William R. Bennett Remembered

W.R. Bennett

The BC Games Society lost a great friend in December.  Mr. William R. Bennett passed away at age 83.  Mr. Bennett founded the BC Games in 1978 while he was Premier of the Province.  He believed in providing "an opportunity to bring all parts of BC together, large and small communities, in the spirit of sport and friendship."

The BC Games are back in the first-ever host community of Penticton this winter and current volunteer Marge Noble, remembers fondly those Games in 1978 when she had the opportunity to meet Mr. Bennett as part of her role as Host Chair.

Coast Capital Savings Leadership Bursary

CCS Bursary

The BC Games Society and Coast Capital Savings have teamed up once again to support the pursuit of achievement through a bursary program. Athletes (and youth coaches and officials) taking part in the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games can apply to receive one of 16 bursaries in the amount of $500.

“Coast Capital Savings is excited to sponsor these bursaries as part of our commitment to building richer futures for youth in our communities,” said Wendy Lachance, Director of Community Leadership at Coast Capital Savings. “The dedication these young people show in pursuing excellence as athletes, students, and community leaders is inspirational.”

Abbotsford Community Awareness Event

Rise Above Reach Beyond

The countdown is on for the 2016 BC Summer Games in Abbotsford, and later this month organizers are set to get the word out in a big way. Games officials are putting together a community awareness event on January 23, with the goal being to increase the awareness base of the event and attract volunteers.

Team Canada's Assistant Chef de Mission

Carol Huynh

She won our hearts with her gold medal performance in wrestling at the 2008 Olympic Games and Carol Huynh of Hazelton, BC has continued to be an inspiration and leader in sport.  We are proud to count Carol as one of our distinguished alumni having competed for the North West zone at the 1996 BC Summer Games.

Carol will now take her considerable multi-sport Games experience to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games as the Assistant Chef de Mission for Team Canada.
