March 2015

British Columbia hosted the nation at our first ever Canada Winter Games from February 13 to March 1.  Prince George showcased northern B.C. and Team BC was front and centre as the host team.  Bringing home 88 medals and placing third in the medal count, the Games were a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

Planning is now underway for the 2016 BC Winter and BC Summer Games and we take a moment to honour one of our outstanding BC Games volunteers, Diana Johnstone.

Alumni Shine at Canada Winter Games

Team BC

141 BC Games alumni were part of Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games and represented 57% of the athletes. Of the 88 medals earned, BC Games alumni won (or contributed to) 54 or 61% of Team BC’s medals.

Eleven northern BC athletes won or contributed to 14 medals including a magical run of four medals for Prince George’s Emily Dickson (2012 BC Winter Games) in biathlon in week one, and a surprise and well deserved bronze medal for Justin Hampole (2014 BC Winter Games) in figure skating.

“BC Games was a really important stepping stone in my career in biathlon so far,” said Dickson. “To be able to go to that event really set me up well so I was no so overwhelmed when I got to such a large multisport event as the Canada Winter Games. I was able to focus more on my event and definitely learned from that previous experience.”

1 Year to Go to 2016 BC Winter Games

Penticton 1 year to go

In less than a year from now, as many as 2,000 athletes, coaches, managers, and officials from across BC will parade in at the Opening Ceremony for the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games. Now is the time athletes are starting their journey to compete at BC’s largest multi-sport event.

“We are so excited that the BC Winter Games are a year away. We cannot wait to welcome athletes, coaches and family members from all over the province to Penticton,” states Bill Bidlake, President of the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games. “It will be an amazing event that celebrates sport, as well as what everyone can achieve with passion and determination. It will be an incredible display for the entire South Okanagan that will leave a lasting legacy for the region.”

This will be the fourth time Penticton has hosted the BC Games. The city was the host of the inaugural BC Summer Games in 1978, the 1990 BC Winter Games and the 1995 BC Summer Games.

To celebrate the return of the BC Games to Penticton, the Host Society Board of Directors is holding a “Name Our Games” contest.

This contest is seeking entries for a slogan or tagline that would ideally become associated with the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games and used in promotional materials and possibly as the hashtag for social media.  Deadline for entries is April 24, 2015.  Read more...
