May 2014

The 2014 BC Summer Games are now only 70 days away.  From July 17-20 Nanaimo will welcome as many as 3900 participants from across the province.

New Board Members Welcomed

The BC Games Society has welcomed new members to our Board of Directors including Olympians Simon Whitfield (Triathlon) and Dave Calder (Rowing) as well as Provincial Sport Organization leader Rochelle Winterton of Vancouver, and Terrace based marketing and communications expert Sarah Zimmerman.

“It is an honour to join the board of the BC Games Society and be part of an organization that provides such a valuable experience for our young athletes and has helped launch the careers of many of my fellow Olympians and Paralympians,” said Whitfield.

Economic Impact Study Released

The 2014 BC Winter Games had a direct economic impact of $1.6 million to the local host region of Mission and surrounding Fraser Valley municipalities such as Abbotsford and Pitt Meadows. The study, commissioned by the BC Games Society, measured spending by Games organizers, participants, spectators, and volunteers.

“This study reinforces what host communities have long known—that the BC Games result in positive economic and social benefits, including direct economic impact,” said Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “The study bears out that in addition to the huge benefits the BC Games bring to developing high performance athletes, they also bring significant benefits for communities. The BC Games are a win for everyone.”

Torchlighting Ceremony

Torchlighting

The official countdown to the 2014 BC Summer Games kicked off on April 12 with the Torchlighting Ceremony held at Nanaimo’s Maffeo Sutton Park.

Global Morning News anchor, Steve Darling, emceed the ceremony which was attended by dignitaries, organizers, sponsors, volunteers, and community supporters.

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of the Games torch by bathtub in true Nanaimo fashion. The torch was relayed by four local track and field athletes and 2012 BC Summer Games alumni, Josh Bailey, Jenaya Pynn, Jason Clair, and Alyssa Mouseau. Comox Valley MLA, and Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation, Don McRae, lit the torch on behalf of Minister Oakes.

National Volunteer Week

NVW

National Volunteer Week was April 6-12 and we were proud to recognize and thank the thousands of volunteers who make the BC Winter and BC Summer Games such incredible events through a video tribute.

From our provincial Board of Directors, to Host Society volunteers, and Provincial Sport Organization volunteers, we are constantly amazed by the dedication and commitment of people in communities across British Columbia.

The true impact of our volunteers is most accurately shown by the comments we receive from athletes. The experiences they have at the BC Games is all thanks to the hundreds of hours that volunteers dedicate to ensure a high quality and memorable event.
