November 2014

As the 2014 BC Winter and BC Summer Games communities wrap up their events, we are already looking forward to 2016 and bringing the Games to Penticton and Abbotsford.  We have been busy reviewing and planning with our partners and keeping track of the successes of some of our BC Games alumni.

PSO Partner Meeting

PSO Meeting

The BC Games Society and our BC Summer and BC Winter Games Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) partners gathered on October 30 to review information about Games operations, share best practices and processes established by PSOs, and to discuss specific topics to assist the BC Games Society in planning and policy development.

2015 Torch Relay

On October 17, the Canada Games Roly McLenahan Torch arrived in Victoria officially starting the British Columbia leg of the 2015 Canada Winter Games Torch Relay.

19 BC Games alumni and Team BC hopefuls representing 11 winter sports took part in the ceremony as the official flag procession.  Olympian Kelsey Serwa and 2015 Team BC curler and BC Games alumni, Tim Henderson, were the official torch bearers.

Olympian Kelsey Serwa named Honorary Captain of Team BC

Kelsey Serwa

Olympian, BC Games and Team BC alumna, Kelsey Serwa, has been named the Honourary Captain of Team BC for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

“It was a real eye-opener for me to attend the BC Games and Canada Games and I remember the pride I felt representing my hometown and province.  I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with the 2015 athletes and cheering on Team BC to a fantastic performance!”

Kelsey began skiing as a child at Big White Resort and quickly took up racing leading her to the 2002 BC Winter Games.  From there, she won gold for Team BC at the 2007 Canada Winter Games and then culminated with a silver medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

In Her Footsteps is an annual recognition program celebrating women who have brought about positive change in the world of sport and recreation in British Columbia.  Joy Fera and Bev Viger are outstanding leaders in their respective sports and were chosen as the 2014 honourees.

Through their years of dedication, both Joy and Bev have also contributed to the BC Summer Games and we are proud to count them as BC Games alumni.
