September 2014

With our beautiful summer turning quickly into fall we are reflecting on a successful BC Summer Games in Nanaimo and celebrating the legacies.  It is a time for review and renewal as we begin to look to 2016 with the communities of Penticton and Abbotsford soon to begin planning to host British Columbia's best.

Significant Community Legacies in Nanaimo

BC Games Legacy

While the final numbers are still being calculated, the 2014 BC Summer Games legacy is sure to be record setting.  With nearly $1 million raised through the Friends of the Games, it is safe to say there will be a significant financial legacy left.  "Sponsors and the community rallied together to make these Games a tremendous success," said Rod Milner, Director of Friends of the Games.  In addition to the financial impact, the community benefited from facility upgrades, equipment purchases, volunteer training, and capacity building.

Blazer Presentation

When Margart Kilner found her late husband Frank's navy blazer from the 1985 BC Summer Games in Nanaimo she remembered fondly the positive experience of those Games. "I was in awe of the amount of work and planning it took," she said.  Kilner contacted the 2014 BC Summer Games and a surprise presentation quickly took place where Kilner was able to give the blazer to current President Jeff Lott.

BC Games Alumni success

It was a busy summer for BC Games alumni at the Commonwealth Games and Youth Olympics.  31 BC Games alumni took part on the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with six alumni contributing to the medal count including Kirsten Sweetland (Triathlon) and Chrisabel Nettey (Athletics).  At the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing China, five BC Games alumni took part including Nicole and Megan McNamara who brought home silver in Beach Volleyball.

Four BC Summer Games athletes were featured in the BC Government News BC B-Sides blog.  Here is an excerpt.

The Ones to Watch
"Every year hundreds of athletes are up before you or me, training, sweating and painfully pushing themselves to achieve their goals. No, we’re not talking about Olympic or Paralympic athletes, we’re talking about BC Summer Games athletes.

We thought we’d introduce you to a few who participated in the most recent BC Summer Games, which took place in Nanaimo July 17-20. Though, we’ve got a bit of a twist for you, as these are not necessarily the athletes that made it to the podium, though some did, but they are some of the unique kids who blend athletic talent and strong character."
