Technical Package for Badminton

Kamloops 2018 BC Winter Games
February 22-25, 2018

Technical packages provide details of the eligibility requirements as well as event and competition information.  In order to fully understand the rules and requirements for participation in the BC Games, it is expected that the BC Games General Rules will be read in addition to the sport-specific information contained in the technical package.

Age Description:
Players must be at least 13 years old and not older than 14 years old, as of January 1, 2018.
Zone Team Composition:
A maximum of 10 competitors (5 female and 5 male) per zone
No wildcards
Maximum Athletes:

1 head coach and 1 assistant coach (one of each gender) are permitted per zone. An adult supervisor (non certified) is permitted to replace an assistant coach as long as they are the opposite gender to the head coach.

Every zone must name a head coach.  If assistant coaches have any NCCP training they are registered with the role "assistant coach", otherwise they are registered with the role "adult supervisor".  See BC Games General Rules for more information.

The sport is permitted to register 11 officials.

Transportation, accommodation, and meals, as arranged by the Host Society, will be provided for officials. See BC Games General Rules for more information.

Athlete Eligibility:

In addition to BC Games General Rules, the sport-specific eligibility requirements noted in this technical package are in effect for the 2018 BC Winter Games.

All players at Zone Qualification Events must be members of Badminton BC. All players must have a minimum of Recreational Badminton BC membership. Players may attend only one BC Winter Games in Badminton. If you were a spare in 2016 and did not attend the 2016 Games you are eligible to try out for the team again as long as you meet the age requirements. A minimal entry fee will be charged at the Zone Qualification Events.
Coach Eligibility:

Note that the role of head coaches and assistant coaches at the BC Games includes travelling to and from the Games with the team/zone, residing with the team/zone in BC Games accommodation, and acting in a supervisory capacity throughout the Games.

All Coaches must be fully certified at NCCP Level 2 or Provincial coach trained. Assistant Coaches must have completed Making Ethical Decisions module and Shuttle Time Training module. All coach certifications are to be completed by the start of the Games.

BC Games General Rules dictate the level of coach certification required for head coaches and assistant coaches unless otherwise stated in this Technical Package - click here for details.  A minimum of Making Ethical Decisions is required for all assistant coaches - more information can be found here.

Events and Categories:
The current International Laws of Badminton as adopted by Badminton Canada shall be applied except for the Indiviual Singles event. For both the Team and Individual competitions, a match is best two out of three games. Each game is to twenty-one (21) points.. If the score becomes 20-all, the side which gains a two point lead first, shall win that game. If the score becomes 29-all, the side scoring the 30th point shall win that game. Scheduling shall be done by the Provincial Advisor, the Sport Chair and the Technical Director of Badminton B.C.

Individual Competition: (a) The Individual Doubles Competitions shall be an elimination format with a consolation round (b) The Singles Individual Competitions will be a drop flight (ABCD) with the first round of matches in the A and C draws only being one game to 21 with setting as necessary and all other matches will be the best of 3. c) The Individual Competitions will precede the Team Competition. The Seeding’s and the Draws Will be determined and made public at the same time as the first round of the Team Competition and both competitions shall be done by a representative of Badminton BC. (d) Badminton BC will supply the seeding for the individual competition events at least 7 days prior to the Games’ opening day. The seeding is absolute and no appeals will be entertained. (e) All players eligible for the Team Competition are eligible for one (1) Individual Competition event of their and their coaches choosing. This event must be identified at the time of the BC Games entry deadline. (f) The format of the Individual Competition shall be as follows: Girls’ Singles: 16 players (2 girls from each zone) Boys’ Singles: 16 players (2 boys from each zone) Girls’ Doubles: 8 teams (1 team from each zone) Boys’ Doubles: 8 teams (1 team from each zone) Mixed Doubles: 8 teams (1 team from each zone) Scheduling to be released with individual/team draws (g) The first round of the team competition is chosen from the results of 2016.

Zone Selections and Registration Deadline: 

BC Games Society requires all registration be completed using the BC Games Participant Online Registration process no later than 4:00 pm on Monday, January 22, 2018, unless an earlier date is set by the Provincial Sport Organization and is included in this technical package.  See BC Games General Rules for registration procedures.

All Zone Qualifications shall be coordinated through Badminton BC staff and completed by October 15, 2017.

All participants under 19 years of age are required to stay in BC Games accommodation and to be supervised by adult members of their zone team.

The Minus-One Rule will be implemented for all sports. This means that when there are four or more competitors or teams, Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals will be awarded; when there are three competitors or teams, Silver and Gold medals will be awarded, and when there are two competitors or teams only a Gold medal will be awarded. Medals will be awarded in each event within the parameters of the BC Games Society Minus-One Rule.

In addition, Badminton BC will present Fair Play Awards (to one male and one female competitor as selected by the umpires and referees) and the Team Spirit Award (to the team that demonstrates team spirit and respect for others, also as selected by the referees and umpires).

Participant information is collected under the authority of the BC Games Society. The information provided will be used to determine eligibility to participate in the 2018 BC Winter Games. On confirmation of eligibility the information will be used to arrange liability insurance coverage to address any claims arising from the voluntary participation of registered participants in the 2018 BC Winter Games. The name, hometown, sport, and results of registered participants will be provided to media outlets and available on the BC Games Society and the Kamloops 2018 BC Winter Games Society websites for the purpose of acknowledging selection for participation and placing. The names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, results, and/or images of registered participants may be used in non-commercial promotion/development of sport and/or the BC Summer and/or BC Winter Games or the BC Games Society. The names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, results, and/or images of Games participants may be provided to the Premier and/or the Minister responsible for the Games, and/or to members of the legislative assembly, and/or to local members of parliament, and/or to the media for the purposes of recognition, and/or to a local municipal volunteer agency or department and/ or to BC Games sport partners for the purpose of recognition and/or informing of sport-related and/or training opportunities and/or to school principals and/or school district superintendents for the purpose of recognition and acknowledgement. Volunteers and participants may be protected for their actions vis a vis third party claims through the liability insurance for the Games but are not covered for any personal claims for injury or accident. Participants and volunteers agree to release, discharge and undertake not to commence action against the Kamloops 2018 BC Winter Games Society, the Province of British Columbia, and the BC Games Society from any and all claims and causes of action, or liability of any kind whatsoever for injuries, property damage, or death which in any way results from participating or volunteering in the Kamloops 2018 BC Winter Games.

The BC Games Society will not be liable for any communication between a BC Games Society participant and/or volunteer and any third party group that receives the participant and/or volunteer contact information list from the BC Games Society after the two year period expires under the Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation Act (an Act to promote the efficiency and adaptability of the Canadian economy by regulating certain activities that discourage reliance on electronic means of carrying out commercial activities, and to amend the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission Act, the Competition Act, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and the Telecommunications Act S.C. 2010, c. 23) (“Act”). The two year period begins at the conclusion of the 2018 BC Winter Games. This clause is a defence to any violation under the Act regarding any communication between a third party group and a participant and/or volunteer of the BC Games Society that occurs after the two year period has expired. By completing a volunteer registration form (online or paper copy) or being registered to attend the 2018 BC Winter Games participants and volunteers are agreeing to all of the terms outlined in this conditions of entry agreement.
